Come LEARN, SPEAK your mind, and ADVOCATE for women's rights this THURSDAY @ 7:30PM in the ALS Room!

NO-CHOICE: A Discussion on the Forced Sterilization of Women of Color by the US Government

Pro-life? Pro-choice?
Unfortunately, some women have NO-CHOICE. Come and learn about the historical and present forced sterilization of women of color by the US government. When has it happened? Why has it happened? Is it still happening now? Come and get all of your questions answered.
The reproductive freedoms of women of color have been repressed for centuries. Let's talk about how this affects us from a sociological and health perspective and what we can do to protect ourselves and our communities from forced sterilization.

Join Sigma Lambda Upsilon/Señoritas Latinas Unidas Sorority, Inc., along with our featured guest speakers Dr. Belisa Gonzalez (Ithaca College, Sociology Department), Dr. Shewanee Howard (Ithaca College, Health Sciences and Human Performance School), and Dr. Paula Ioanide (Ithaca College, Center for the Study of Culture, Race, and Ethnicity) as we discuss this issue and encourage advocacy and action.

How pressing and relevant is this issue?
Just check out this quote from 2005: “I do know that it’s true that if you wanted to reduce crime, you could — if that were your sole purpose — you could abort every black baby in this country, and your crime rate would go down. That would be an impossible, ridiculous, and morally reprehensible thing to do, but your crime rate would go down.” - William Benett, Former United States Secretary of Education

WHEN: THURSDAY, September 24, 2009 @ 7:30PM WHERE: African-Latino Society Room, Ithaca College

Refreshments will be provided.
